Digital Transformation On Virginia Railway Express Network Continues With Comply365 Mobile App

Northern Virginia commuter network improving safety, compliance, and operations through technology

Beloit, WI – MARCH 7, 2023 – Having led the way in passenger rail deployments at its operation of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Commuter Rail network, Keolis North America is extending the Comply365 mobile technology to its operation of the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) network in Washington, DC and northern Virginia.

In 2021, Keolis deployed the cloud-hosted software provider Comply365’s innovative content management system and mobile app for train crews and other personnel across its Boston commuter rail operation. Keolis is continuing this digital transformation of transit services in partnership with VRE. Conductors and engineers will now rely on an application-equipped tablet to access critical operating rules, bulletins, special instructions, and other important documents they would otherwise have to physically carry.

“Moving to digital delivery of critical content will allow our crews to more quickly and easily access and search safety and operating procedures, rather than flipping through bulky paper,” said John Kerins, general manager of Keolis rail operations in Virginia. “The Comply365 platform will help us create a more efficient operation while further enhancing safety and compliance.”

Operating on two Class I railroads and Amtrak territory, VRE crews are required to be proficient in three completely separate sets of rules and operating procedures. By transitioning to a digital platform, crews will be able to easily search and identify applicable rules across territories, even where practices differ by host railroad.

Beyond the operational benefits, Keolis has seen printed distributions reduced by over 95% at terminals. representing both significant cost and time savings and contributing to Keolis’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The rail operation will also be able to target and personalize the documents it distributes and automatically track compliance – providing an easier way to verify that frontline employees have read and understood important updates to rules and operating procedures. Comply365’s intuitive mobile app will enable crew members to quickly search and filter across all their documents, create bookmarks, and annotate important documents.

Comply365’s rail division includes several Class I, II and III freight customers, as well as passenger and commuter rail operators. Digital transformation has improved rail safety by simplifying the authoring, distributing and compliance of all content associated with operating practices. In addition to targeted content distribution, data captured in the field from electronic forms is contributing to greater efficiencies. Digital transformation has also introduced the automation of training programs to ensure new levels of safety.

“It’s a pleasure to expand the Keolis partnership and welcome Keolis’s operation of the VRE network to our Comply365 Community of rail users who are digitally transforming their operations,” Comply365 CEO Tom Samuel said. “We are excited that VRE crews will enjoy the benefits that come from the elimination of paper books and easier access to the operational content they need to safely do their job.”

VRE provides commuter rail service from Central and Northern Virginia to Alexandria, Crystal City and Washington, D.C. It operates 32 trains from 19 stations, carrying an average of 6,000 passengers daily.

Train Crews to Have Instant, Easy Access to Critical Content

Beloit, WI – JAN. 24, 2023 – Cloud-hosted software provider Comply365 is pleased to announce its continued transformation of the rail industry with its newest partner, Conrail, which will convert its large “grips” of paper rulebooks into a more efficient operation with Comply365’s content management system and mobile app for train crews.

Comply365’s solution will enable Conrail to better enhance safety and compliance – and provide new efficiencies as train crews leave large paper manuals behind, and access all their critical documents with easy searching on a tablet.

Class 1 railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern jointly own Conrail, which as a local service provider ensures customers’ freight shipments are safely and efficiently moved between their rail sidings and the long-distance freight trains operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern.

“We needed an innovative system that would keep our rulebooks consistent across our network and make it easy for our crews to access the information they need to do their jobs safely and efficiently,” said Brian Simon, Manager of Safety at Conrail. “The experience and value Comply365 bring will make it a smooth transition for our administrators to begin electronic document delivery and an intuitive experience for our mobile end users.”

Thanks to Comply365’s expansive customer community of rail users and the use of APIs, Conrail plans to easily tap into rulebooks, bringing operational efficiencies for Conrail.

Comply365, whose customers include many of the major airlines across the globe, is leading a digital transformation in the rail industry, much like it did in aviation a decade ago. Comply365’s rail division includes several Class 1 freight customers, as well as passenger and commuter rail operators across North America.

Conrail’s project will digitize rulebooks, bulletins, special instructions, and other mission-critical documents that train conductors, engineers and other operational personnel must carry to safely operate across the rail system. The New Era For Rail Operational Content

If your railroad’s paper-based operational documents are a thing of the past – now ready to become a collector’s item on eBay – congratulations! Digital transformation for rail’s paper-based grips, bulletins, timetables, general orders, rule books and manuals are a big accomplishment and should be celebrated. But taking the next digital step is where even more value comes in. First movers in rail experienced the cost reductions, efficiencies, and safety gains of digitizing documents. But the journey continues to a broader transformation – the era of smart content delivery.

The days of searching for content are gone. Smart operational content now follows a crew member based on their roles, duties, or routes.

Railroads can deliver tremendous value to their mobile end users by delivering content that provides a more personalized and targeted experience. This starts during the authoring process by creating smart content that is tailored and automatically delivered based on attributes of every user (role, locomotive, segment, and more). Crew members no longer need to search through a ton of irrelevant bulk information to find the relevant information they need. By empowering the mobile end user with the right content, right when they need it, they increase the safety and efficiency of the operation. Digital Transformation in RailComply365 has been partnering with rail operators to provide support at every step of their digital transformation journey, including delivery of smart content to engineers and conductors. In this Railway Age article, read more about three major initiatives where our technology is at the cornerstone. Ready to learn more? Keolis Boston and Comply365 Further Modernize MBTA Commuter Rail With New Digital Tools

Comply365 to digitize train crew materials for easy access and to eliminate cumbersome paper manuals that must be on-hand; MBTA Commuter Rail first of its type to adopt this safety modernization in U.S.

Beloit, WI – Jan. 26, 2021 – Keolis Commuter Services (Keolis), operating partner for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Commuter Rail network, has partnered with cloud-hosted software provider Comply365 to adopt an innovative content management system and mobile application for train crews and other operational personnel. These platforms will further digitize Commuter Rail operations, enhance safety and compliance, and provide new efficiencies, including eliminating the need for train crews to carry large paper manuals.

“We warmly welcome Keolis and their crews across the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Commuter Rail to the Comply365 rail division community,” Comply365 CEO Tom Samuel said. “We are honored they have chosen to partner with us in their transformation to a digital operation, allowing them to enhance the delivery of safe, reliable, and consistent rail services.”

Comply365 is an industry leader in providing operators a user-friendly mobile solution to access the mission-critical information they need at their fingertips, with the ability to quickly search and filter, bookmark, and annotate important documents.

With funding from the MBTA, Comply365’s platform will support Keolis’ digital transformation to electronic content delivery using tablets. The move digitizes rulebooks, bulletins, special instructions, and other operational documents that more than 1,000 train conductors, locomotive engineers, track workers, and other operational personnel are required to carry when operating on the Commuter Rail network. Keolis and the MBTA will be able to more easily verify that important updates to rules and operating procedures have been read and understood by the relevant front-line employees, further enhancing compliance and safety.

“We’ve introduced a number of digital innovations since 2014 in partnership with the MBTA, such as the ability to accept credit cards onboard trains and biometric timeclocks,” said David Scorey, Keolis CEO and General Manager. “This platform will make critical safety and compliance information even more accessible and easier to reference for our operational personnel. Further, updates to these materials will be much easier to administer.”

Certain employees, such as train conductors and engineers, are required to carry and reference rulebooks and other documentation when operating on the railroad. Keolis’ adoption of the Compy365 platform makes MBTA Commuter Rail the first U.S. commuter network to introduce this innovation and digitize its federally-mandated documentation. Similar innovations were introduced in the airline industry when the FAA approved replacing paper manuals with electronic flight bags.

Comply365, whose customers include many of the major airlines around the globe, is leading a similar transformation in the railway industry after investments to enhance its solution for rail users. In addition to Keolis and the MBTA Commuter Rail, Comply365’s rail division has grown to include Canadian National, Amtrak and Norfolk Southern.

“Our depth of experience in transforming the complex aviation industry in similar ways prove our expertise and solutions are leading a pivotal aspect of the rail industry’s digital transformation to shed paper-based documentation,” Samuel said. “It’s exciting to partner with leaders in both rail and aviation organizations who value our vision. There is a lot to be gained by both industries as we collaborate together on their mutual challenges to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant digital operations.”
